The NFL trade deadline is today at 4 pm and while the Bills are actively looking at making a move or two, there is one trade in Bills history that changed the fortunes of the franchise.

The trade happened back in 1987. The Bills were looking to bring in some talent on the defensive side of the ball and luck would have it that an AFC rival at the time couldn't get their highly talented draft pick to sign with them.

After this trade was made, The NY Times called it the "Trade of the Decade" and this trade would work out in Buffalo's favor as they would be the clear-cut winner of this three-team deal.

The trade happened on the last day of the NFL trade deadline that year and the Bills along with the Indianapolis Colts and the Los Angeles Rams worked together to complete a three-way trade.

The Colts got a bonafide superstar in running back Eric Dickerson.

The Bills got the most talented linebacker in the 1987 and #2 overall pick Cornelius Bennett

The Rams got a pair of running back, Greg Bell from Buffalo and Owen Gill from the Colts along with a plethora of draft picks. The Rams got both the Bills and the Colts' 1st round picks in 1988, 1st round picks in 1989 and 2nd round picks in 1989.

In the end, Dickerson never panned out as the superstar running back for the Colts and the Rams wasted those high-round picks and none of them turned into anything more than above-average players.

The Bills got a perennial pro bowler and possible NFL Hall of Fame linebacker in Bennett.

Bennett along with Daryle Talley and Bruce Smith help lead the Bills' defense to four straight Super Bowls.

During his career with the Bills, Bennett would be named to 3 All-Pro teams, and 5 Pro Bowls, was named to the NFL All-Rookie team, and was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade 2nd team.

While the Bills gave up a lot, the return on investment was tremendous and that is why this is the greatest trade in Buffalo Bills' history.
