There was a time when every single town in America had a hardware store. Some of them had multiple hardware stores. But today, they're a little harder to find. Many of them have been put out of business by big-box stores. So, where can you find a local hardware store in Western New York these days?

This isn't an attempt to take shots at big-box stores

We certainly aren't saying that you should never shop at big-box stores. There's a reason why those stores have taken over. They have almost everything that you could need there, and the things you can't find there, you can normally find online if you're willing to wait a day or two. Unfortunately for the local stores, they often have prices and sales that the little guys normally just can't beat.

Benefits of shopping at a local hardware store over a big-box store

The thing that old-school local hardware stores could offer that these big-box stores normally can't is service. They had a level of expertise that you normally can't find in the huge corporate stores.

Plus, you're helping to support your own local economy when you shop at the local hardware and tool stores. A large amount of that money will then stay in your town to support other businesses and people who live and work there. They become a kind of community hub where people can gather and actually connect.

They're normally quicker to shop too. They're more compact, and it's easier to find what you need and get back to your job instead of wasting time looking in aisles that don't have what you need.

While an unfortunate number of small local hardware and tool stores have closed over the last couple of years, there are still some left here in Western New York. If you'd like to support some, here are a couple you can check out.
