The Grass Field At Highmark Stadium Has Gone Pink

The Buffalo Bills have been working hard to get the grass field at Highmark Stadium in the best shape possible. So why was there a picture on social media showing the grass colored bright pink today?

Many NFL Players prefer grass over turf

Most of the players will tell you that they prefer to play games on grass fields as opposed to artificial turf. The biggest reason is that, in general, it seems to cut down on injuries. Grass seems to give a little more than turf, which often leads to twisted ankles and knees.

The grass has been a challenge at the new stadium

Early in the season, some players were asked about the grass at Highmark Stadium and they didn't seem thrilled. Bradley Chubb was asked his thoughts and his response was "Uh, that's a bit above my paygrade, but you know, whatever you heard it's accurate." Joshua Palmer added that he thought we could make some improvements too.

The Bills acted quickly to make it right before the regular season started. They ripped up all of the grass and replaced it.

"We chose to re-sod because we were not happy with the way the current field was performing. Until we can get a full season of play on the field, we will continually be learning and correcting what we do to the field." - Aaron Ramella, Bills senior director of fields and grounds

The change seemed to work. Many of the players following the home opener seemed to notice a huge difference and were happy with the new sod.

Why is the grass pink now?

Today, a picture was shared on social media of the field, but instead of the bright green grass that we saw at the Thursday night game, it was bright pink.

As you can see, it's an effort to help stimulate rapid photosynthesis and promote strong root development by using energy-efficient LED lights.

It might look a little weird right now, but if it's going to help keep the players healthy for the rest of the season, it's completely worth it.
