New York State Law Requires This Item For Certain Hikers
We are getting ready to unofficially kick off summer in New York, and if you love the outdoors, there are few places better for hiking, camping, and outdoor adventure. If you plan to hit the trails this weekend or anytime this summer, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding hikers and backpackers about an important law designed to protect both people and wildlife.
New York State Is an Outdoor Paradise
New York offers an incredible variety of outdoor activities. One day, you could be fishing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of New York City, and the next you could be hunting whitetail deer or black bear in the Southern Tier.

For those who love camping, there are dozens of beautiful state campgrounds and privately owned campsites scattered throughout the Empire State.
Many people who have never visited New York assume the entire state looks like New York City. For those of us in Western New York, it can be frustrating to hear that misconception. Once you get beyond the bright lights and skyscrapers, New York reveals a vast landscape of rolling hills, forests, lakes, and streams.
From the Capital Region to Niagara Falls, New York State is filled with natural beauty and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Protecting New York’s Wildlife and Wilderness
Maintaining New York’s wilderness is a significant responsibility. Numerous laws and regulations help protect hikers, campers, wildlife, and the environment.
If you plan to go backpacking or camping in the Eastern High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains between now and November 30, the DEC requires the use of a bear-resistant canister.
Bear Canisters Required in the Eastern High Peaks
Anyone staying overnight in the backcountry and carrying food must store all food, toiletries, and garbage in a sturdy bear-resistant canister.
This rule does more than reduce litter. It helps prevent dangerous encounters between humans and bears. Black bears are highly intelligent and always looking for an easy meal. Improperly stored food can quickly attract them to campsites.
"Bear cans are required by overnight users in the Eastern High Peaks until November 30".
Check Trail Conditions Before You Go
Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest times of year for outdoor recreation in New York State. If this is your first camping or hiking trip of the season, be sure to check the latest backcountry conditions before heading out.
The DEC’s trail and backcountry reports provide up-to-date information on weather, trail conditions, and important regulations for hiking, camping, and exploring New York’s great outdoors.
Whether you’re planning a weekend in the Adirondacks, a camping trip in the Catskills, or a simple day hike close to home, following these rules will help keep both you and New York’s wildlife safe all summer long.
