Demolition Set To Begin On Perry Projects In Buffalo

More development is on the way to Buffalo, as officials at the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority announce that the long-pending demolition of the infamous Perry Projects just outside Downtown Buffalo is ready to commence.

Officials announced in 2023 that hundreds of millions in federal money would be set aside to revitalize the long-neglected housing project.

This project is long overdue as the Perry Projects have been largely ignored and neglected for years by city, county, state, and federal officials and agencies.

Hundreds Of Millions To Be Spent Rebuilding The Perry Projects

With the demolition of the BMHA housing project set to move forward this week, the plan to revitalize the more than two dozen abandoned Commodore Perry Homes buildings will result in their rebuilding to modern standards.

More than $250 million will be spent constructing 27 new buildings, bringing more than 500 affordable apartments online in Buffalo. In addition, there will be additional space for commercial and retail businesses.

The project is using funds from various state and federal sources, including more than $115 million in state and federal low-income tax credits, nearly $22 million in tax-exempt bonds, more than $83 million in subsidies from New York Homes & Community Renewal, along with another roughly $18 million from various other sources.

Named for Naval Officer Commodore Matthew Perry and constructed in 1940, the Perry Projects have been vacant for several years and are falling into serious disrepair. Construction is expected to be done by 2029, with the first phase expected to be online and ready for rent by mid-2025.
