Only 5 Wyoming County Restaurants Passed Health Code Inspections

Health code inspectors in Wyoming County were busy last month checking to make sure each restaurant and other non-food spots that prepare food, like schools and jails, meet certain safety standards. Many restaurants passed with flying colors.

There is also a long list of those who did not pass. Health code inspectors in Wyoming County will give restaurants violations for things like "Food (ice) contact surfaces are improperly designed, constructed, installed, located (cracks, open seams, pitted surfaces, tin cans reused, uncleanable or corroded food contact surfaces)," and "Single service items reused, improperly stored, dispensed, not used when required."

Gold Star Distribution, Inc. has issued a recall for over 2,000 products. The products may have been contaminated by pests, including rodents, birds, and insects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that the facility had unsanitary conditions, including rodent feces and urine, and bird droppings. This potentially hazardous waste was discovered in areas where medicine, human food, pet food, and cosmetic products were stored. The products at the center of the recall may be contaminated with harmful microorganisms. Exposure to rodent waste could cause Salmonella.

Incidents like this remind us of why it's so important for health code inspectors to do their jobs. New Yorkers can get sick from food exposed to pests or to unsanitary conditions. Last month, there were only 5 restaurants in Wyoming County that passed their health code inspections. Eleven did not pass.
