A project reinventing a former Buffalo public school is finally getting off the ground.

The Buffalo News reports the conversion of the former Lincoln Academy into affordable housing is back on the table after four years of delays.

The former Buffalo Public School 44, located at 1349 Broadway, is looking to be the new location of over 60 apartments -- housing that "will be affordable for those earning no more than 60% of the area median income," according to developers.

As well, 33 of the proposed units are being set aside for victims of domestic violence and would also receive services from Catholic Charities, according to the Buffalo News.

Plans by architects at Carmina Wood Morris PC call for the 127,000-square-foot building at 1349 Broadway to be renovated into a combination of 24 one-bedroom, 27 two-bedroom and 14 three-bedroom units, along with an 80-space parking lot, a patio and a playground.

The apartments will range in size from 740 square feet to 1,600 square feet. The building will also include a community room and a computer lab.

Funding for the project comes from a multitude of state and federal tax credits and grants; including historic tax credits.

The Buffalo News reports:

"The $26.8 million project will be funded in part by state and federal historic tax credits, so the work will be performed in conjunction with the National Park Service and State Historic Preservation Office standards."

The plan says construction is expected to take about 18 months, after all approvals and financing are settled. The Planning Board will review the application in two weeks.

Officials are hoping to start work by 2022.
