The results are in and the biggest bear that was shot, and reported, in New York State was taken in Broome County!

The bear hunting season has started in New York State as the early season started this past weekend for portions of the state.

But last year, in 2023, there was an increase in the number of bears taken and the largest one is over 500 pounds.

According to the report from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the bear was shot in Broome County in the regular season and has a field dressed weight of 550 pounds!

"The heaviest reported bear weighed 550 lbs. and was taken in WMU 7S. However,both the Northern and Southern Zones produced male bears in excess of 300 lbs".

That means, based on the average amount of weight reduced when dressing a bear it likely weighed well over 600 pounds!!
