This past winter, New York State had a rather mild winter. It seems that when it did snow, it was a heavy snowfall in a storm. For those of us who love to ski or ride a snowmobile, there was not an ideal amount of snow for the most part. The ski resorts that made their own snow did well. But Mother Nature did not assist them.

The summer is fading, what happens next?? Will the next winter season be rough? Or will the mild conditions continue?

According to at least one website, the simple answer is that there is not any real correlation to the two seasons. "Because while climatologists and meteorologists use fancy science and climate data to see if we're in for a bad winter, it's not at all based on our summer months. There simply is no pattern that predicts a summer-to-winter conversion".

While mild winters may lead to bigger bug populations, like ticks, it does not appear that mild winters mean hot summers and hot summers don't necessarily lead to tough winters.

HOWEVER, when it comes to lake effect snow storms, if the warm weather lasts in to the fall, that could help keep lake waters warmer and fuel lake effect snow storms in to the winter months.
