Even with one of the highest child care costs and among the states with the least affordable housing, New York is high enough in so many other categories that it ranks among the best states to raise a family.  According to the latest figures from the personal finance website WalletHub New York ranked 6th best state for parents with children.

WalletHub compared the 50 states in four major categories using 49 variables.  New York ranked near the top in two of those four major categories; Family Fun and Affordability.

Family Fun took into account the number of other families with children ranging up to 17 years old, attractions, number of fitness and recreation centers and proximity of parks.  New York ranked second in Family Fun.

New York ranked third in Affordability.  Even though housing costs are among the costliest in the nation, other factors swung New York to among the best.  Things such as mortgage and personal debt, median family income, median credit score, health insurance premium, college education savings and retirement access and participation.

New York ranked 17th in Health and Safety and 22nd in Education and Child Care.  WalletHub suggested that some states may have a low income tax rate, but rank poorly in education and other services.
