Summertime in the Empire State often means we see a whole lot more people outside trying to enjoy the nice weather. From folks wanting to get to the lake and beach to people looking to get out on the highways and byways of New York, millions of folks are on the roads every day trying to get to their chosen destination.

For some people, a nice drive through scenic New York is a nice leisurely thing; however, for others, it's time to make your best Bo "Bandit" Darville impression while going eastbound and down. While driving fast can be fun, it's often dangerous when not done in a controlled environment.

That's why police agencies all over New York State are bringing back an enforcement blitz that they hope will get folks to slow down.

New York State Police Agencies Bring Speed Week Back

New York's special traffic enforcement campaign called Speed Week is back from Monday, August 4, 2025, through Sunday, August 10, 2025, and will see police agencies from Long Island to Tonawanda stepping up traffic enforcement while looking for people driving above the speed limit.

During the last Speed Week, which happened from Monday, June 9, 2025, to Sunday, June 15, 2025, more than 27,000 traffic tickets were issued by the New York State Police alone. That figure does not include tickets that were issued by local and county agencies, which surely brings the number up a lot higher.

Police agencies across the state will be using marked and unmarked vehicles to find people speeding and driving aggressively, so if you have a habit of road rage or putting the pedal to the metal, this might be the week for you to calm down.

It's generally not a good idea to speed, as a large percentage of traffic crashes involve excessive speed. So do us all a favor, slow down and keep safe.
