It is fall in New York State, and the weather is amazing! This might be the best fall fishing season we have seen in a long time. The only issue might be the lack of rain and lower water levels in the creeks and streams. But if you look back over the 2025 fishing season, it was a record breaker for some!

The fall is a perfect time to fish, and the steelhead fishing is always good in New York State! Here in Western New York, you can see cars and trucks lined up along the side of the road near popular places like 18 Mile Creek. Steelhead fishing is so much fu,n and you can reel in some large fish if you know the right places and have the right rig.

Looking back on 2025, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has released details on at least three record-breaking fish that were caught this year.

The 2025 New York State Fishing Record Books

According to the latest update from the NYS DEC, these three fish were caught this year in New York.

-Benjamin Ferguson caught a record-breaking brook trout weighing 6 lbs. 3 oz.

-Dylan Kampnich caught a record-breaking channel catfish weighing 37 lbs. 9 oz.

-Alex Pidhorodeckyj caught a record-breaking fallfish weighing 4 lbs. 1 oz.

I had to look up what a fallfish is. Turns out it is a massive minnow! "Fallfish are one of the largest minnows native to North America. The body is moderately compressed with an olive to golden-brown color above the lateral line with a dark stripe along the back".

Best of luck if you are fishing this fall and winter!
