The hunting season has already started here in New York State and the weather has made it feel more like mid summer than mid fall. But for the thousands of licensed hunters in New York State, it would be better if we got a cold snap.

It seems theses days there are less hunters than before and the people who are still hunting don't seem to have the time to hunt as often as they would like to or used to.

New York State has a long list of laws pertaining to hunting and some have been changed for the 2024-25 seasons including the back tag laws.

The FORBIDDEN Item For Hunters In New York State

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's website and New York State hunting laws:

"Big game hunters are permitted to carry a .22 caliber rim-fire handgun during regular deer season or early and regular bear seasons, if they possess a NYS pistol permit. The .22 caliber rim-fire handgun cannot be used as a primary or secondary weapon to take deer or bear. It is illegal to possesses a firearm of any kind when bowhunting or when accompanying a person bowhunting during bowhunting seasons".

While there have been a few good bucks already taken here in New York State, the best part of the fall and the season is about to begin! Good luck and remember to report the deer you take!
