The sun is rising on a cold, crisp morning in New York State. The fog on the ponds, streams and rivers is gently moving with the light breeze that is offering the perfect conditions for a mid fall duck hunt. However, before you tag out on ducks, there is an important warning from New York State.

The hunting season for deer is well underway and there have been some great deer taken already. But avid hunters know that the best is yet to come as we get closer to that all important rut.

The cooler mornings are here and the duck hunting is about to begin! For some hunters, it means pausing their days in the deer stand and press play on the duck blind.

There is an alert and warning that some may have missed that involves an issue that has been spotted nationwide. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has posted a warning on it's website that states:

"Attention hunters: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has recently been detected in New York State in many species of waterfowl. Although the risk to humans is low, we encourage hunters to take extra precautions while processing harvested waterfowl".

This year, New York State is also offering Veterans an special mini season to hunt waterfowl. According to the schedule, those with proper credentials who are military can hunt on November 9th and 10th in the Western Region of the state. See the map and schedule for more information.
