The bitter cold air has returned to New York State this week and we are all starting to dream of war, sunnier days!

For those who hate the winter, this has been an especially tough and long season. The Arctic Air is blasting the Empire State and wind chills are well below zero from Buffalo to Albany.

However, it won'y be too long before the spring does get here and most people get out of the house and head to great outdoors!

If you own property, or recently purchased some land in New York State, now is the time to get a plan in place to mark the borders on your land to keep trespassers away.

What The Law Says

New York State has some very specific laws pertaining to trespassing and what the responsibilities are of landowners.

For example, the "11X11" law. New York State makes it clear that there are specific dimensions that are required for the size posted signs need to be.

"Signs must be a minimum of 11 inches by 11 inches. They also must bear the name and address of the owner, lawful occupant, or other person or organization authorized to post the area".

There are some hefty fines in place for those who are caught trespassing here in New York State. However, for those who own the land, it is very frustrating to pay taxes, keep it posted and still have people wonder on private property.

Quick Reminder

As the summer approaches, it is a good idea to remember that unless you are on New York State property, you are on private property and should ask for permission before you enter.
