Parents, just a reminder that you will have to have a plan for your kids on Friday, as public schools will be closed on Friday. Schools, along with government offices, will be closed for the Juneteenth holiday.

Public Schools Closed In New York State

Juneteenth is a recognized federal and state holiday in New York, and that means that New York State public schools will be closed. Some private schools might have classes on Friday, so if you have a child who attends a private school, double-check with the school.

What Else Is Closed For The Juneteenth Holiday?

Like most Federal and state holidays, there will be plenty of offices closed for the day. Here is a list of what you can expect to be closed on Friday, along with schools.

 

  • Government Offices: Non-essential federal, state, and local municipal offices, including the DMV and court systems, will be closed.
  • Banks: Most financial institutions, including banks like Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and local credit unions, will be closed. ATM and online banking remain accessible.
  • Stock Markets: Both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will be closed.
  • Postal Service: All U.S. Post Office locations are closed, and no regular residential and business mail will be delivered

Why Do We Celebrate Juneteenth?

The Juneteenth holiday is recognized as the day that slavery was ended in the United States. It became a Federal Holiday in 2021 and a New York State holiday in October of 2020.

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, thousands of people gathered along Genesee Street, Best Street, and inside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Park in Buffalo to watch the 50th Annual Juneteenth Parade. The Buffalo Juneteenth Festival remains the largest Emancipation Day celebration in the United States.
