The Way This New York Bird Walks Will Make You Laugh Hysterically
I bet you didn't know there was an awards ceremony for birds in New York. There is, and the one that won the "funniest" category is perfect.
Meet the American Woodcock bird. It lives here in New York and if you've ever taken the time to watch them, they're actually pretty funny.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology agrees. Recently they did a "Bird Grammy" awards ceremony on their Facebook page where they awarded birds in categories such as "Best Song," "Best Duet," "Most Nostalgic," "Spookiest" and more.
The bird that won the "Funniest" category was the American Woodcock. It's also known as the timberdoodle, Labrador twister, night partridge, and bog sucker. It's got tons of nicknames. It's described as a small beige-and-tan bird with a large black eye and long thin bill. But the reason it won is not only it's long thin bill and its puffy body, but the way that it moves.
Watch as these two dance their way across the street.
They've actually got a very distinct sound too. Just looking at them, you might think they've got more of a chirp to their call. But in reality it's kind of a low pitched "beep" as they make sounds. It's a very distinct and recognizable call.
I've lived in New York for my entire life and I don't think I've ever seen one of these before. They say that you should listen for them in late evenings in the early spring as that's when they're the most active. You'll hear them as they fly too because they make a very distinct whistling noise as they fall like a leaf to the ground.
