There is a new alert and warning that has been issued by the State of New York that is directed at those who are at least 50 years old. After recent deaths that were caused by Legionnaires’ disease, New York State is trying to educate the public about how to avoid areas that could be linked to Legionnaires’.

The fall is about to start and across New York State, the kids are back in school. It is about this time of the year that we really start to see more and more cases of cold, Flu and COVID. It is not just the little ones that are getting sick. As these germs come home from school, moms and dads and other family members are also at risk.

Now is the time to pay attention to how you plan to fight these germs off. In some cases, it might be a good idea to take more vitamins, get more sleep or just be more germ aware.

The Over 50 Crowd In New York State

As far as what New York State is saying about Legionnaires’ disease, those over 50 are at a higher risk.

There are some things that you can do around the house to avoid the bacteria that is causing the disease. According to New York State, "letting your water faucets run on low before you use them. Avoid splashing for 3 minutes if: They have not been used for three or more days, Your home water system was turned off for plumbing work, You received a boil water order notice".

Another tip that I found interesting is the advice to "Regularly check the chlorine level in your pool or hot tub because chlorine can kill Legionella and other bacteria".

We have three kids in elementary school and we try to make sure they wash their hands when they get home from school and take vitamins to help boost their defense against germs. But as hard as we try, the coughs and colds still make there way in to the house. We also like to have plenty of soup and tissues on hand.
