This week’s Hometown Hero is a guy who has already served some tours overseas and is ready to go back when they need him. Originally from Cheektowaga, our Hometown Hero is 22-year-old Senior Airman Shaun Helsel!

Shaun is a current member of the United States Air Force Reserves and has been since February 2010. He completed an 8-month tour in Afghanistan in 2012 and is always ready/willing to return if needed.

As much as his family likes to support him, Shaun has always been one to support as well. His brother Eric is presently serving in Afghanistan for his second tour. He’s also been very supportive of his dad, who was diagnosed with cancer while he was away. He never missed an opportunity to call and check on him. At home, he is 2nd Lieutenant at West End Fire Co., where he has been a volunteer firefighter since he was 16 years old, and also works a full-time job. He is consistently working and training to fulfill his career goal to be a firefighter.

So to Shaun, thank you for everything you’ve done. We want to honor you by calling you our Hometown Hero of the week.

If you would like to nominate someone who is currently serving our country or has served in the past, click the button below. We will choose a new Hometown Hero each Friday. If their name is chosen, we will not only feature them on WYRK.com, but we’ll be sure to thank them for their service on the air and dedicate the first song on Noon Tunes to them.
