Rochester Airport Is Set To Get A New Name

Next time that you fly into or out of the Rochester airport, you will notice that it has a new name.

A couple of weeks ago, the Monroe County Legislator voted to rename the airport after Frederick Douglass who started his own newspaper "The North Star" in the city back in 1847.

According to Spectrum News, his great-great-granddaughter who still lives in Rochester said the naming the airport after he is a great honor to his legacy and to his family.

“This is an incredible honor for the Douglass family which includes all of the residents of Rochester, New York. Thanks to everyone who made this possible including Richard Glaser, who started the name change petition, and the Monroe County Legislature. I can’t wait to hear the captain say, ‘Welcome to Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport

This is the first time the Airport name has been changed since 1987.

The idea to rename the airport after Douglass happened after a Change.org petition for the name change had almost 5,000 signatures.

The airport has been known as Britton Field, the Rochester Municipal Airport, the Rochester Monroe County Airport, and The Greater Rochester International Airport.

The airport will now be officially known as "Frederick Douglass – Greater Rochester International Airport."
