State police are going to be cracking down on this starting TODAY and going through Sunday.

DWI's and impaired driving will be a priority by New York State police and they will be looking out for anyone behind a wheel impaired. When you see extra police presence out there; you will know why.

You always should be safe on the road and be aware, but this weekend you need to look out especially on the roads. Not because of you, but look out for the other people who may be drinking and driving. There really is no reason someone needs to drink and drive now that we have Uber and Lyft here in Western New York.

Unfortunately, people are still driving behind the wheel and New York State on their StopDWI.com website recognized that the more that people see police out and the more that people know that police are on the lookout for DWI's, the number of incidents is reduced.

Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. Sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols play a key part in raising awareness about the problem.

It is sad that it has to be that way, but starting today through this weekend, you can expect that you will see a whole lot more New York State troopers around town this weekend.

Don't drink and drive, people! Take an Uber!
