There is about to be a migration in the skies over New York State! Over the next couple of weeks, one of the most intriguing birds will return for the spring and summer.

The warmer weather sure feels great and the sunshine has everyone in a good mood these days. For those who love nature, the spring in New York State is a great time of the year.

Get your binoculars ready, as this is going to be exciting.

These Massive Birds Will Fill New York State's Skies

Typically, at the end of March in to early April the Great Blue Heron start to come back. Although there are some that stay throughout the winter, for the most part the "GBH" birds winter somewhere warmer.

According to the New York State DEC website, "Most active during dusk and dawn; abundant throughout the breeding season (mid-April to late-June) and the summer. Most migrate for the winter. Some will remain where there is open (unfrozen) water for foraging, such as along the lower Hudson River and the coast of Long Island".

These are majestic birds and can be seen around ponds and swamps.

Although there are some cases in which you can see a Great Blue Heron in a more popular place like a park.

I have been seeing more and more of these birds in the Western New York area, and when they fly over, it is something special to see. Keep an eye out for the return of the Great Blue Heron, and like any wildlife, keep a safe distance from them and their nests.
