City of Tonawanda police Det. David Ljiljanich who is a 19-year veteran of the police force was released from ECMC this morning after being shot by a suspect yesterday.

According to WIVB, Det. Ljiljanich was shot several times during the altercation but was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

As part of the standard protocol, Ljiljanich was wearing a bulletproof vest when he was struck by gunfire. His vest took two of the shots, which struck him in the upper and lower body.

The suspect in the shooting, Matthew Gerwitz was arraigned on two counts of first-degree attempted murder, one count of second-degree attempted murder, and illegal weapons charges and could face anywhere from 25 years to life if convicted.
