Tornado Chance Soon in Parts of New York State
This August has not been the usual August weather here in Western and Central New York. It's been cooler than normal, with some heavy thunderstorms.
We're just a couple of weeks away from the start of fall, which means we will trade shorts for jeans and sweatpants. For many, that's a welcomed relief. For others, it's a sad end to the warm weather.
One thing we will not miss about the summer season are heavy thunderstorms that bring heavy rain and the threat of hail and even the isolated risk of tornadoes. We have had a handful of severe weather chances since June, with the latest edition late Thursday night and into the early morning hours of Friday morning.
The National Weather Service details the chance of heavy rain and hail in Western and Central New York tonight and early Friday morning. These storms can bring high winds and even hail.
Mike Cejka of WIVB says that there is a slight risk of a tornado with these storms, with a higher risk in the southern tier of Western New York.
The good news with these storms is that it should be short-lived. Friday will feature some lingering rain before drier weather in the afternoon. Saturday looks far more dry than it did a few days ago, but still the chance of thunderstorms.
Sunday looks to be the best day of the weekend, with partly to mostly sunny skies and less humidity. Highs should be in the mid-70's.
By next Friday, it will be September.
For tonight, stay safe and keep an eye on your local weather forecast. Leave alerts on for the National Weather Service.
