One of the brightest stars in auto racing, Dan Wheldon, was killed during the final race of the Indy League season yesterday in Las Vegas.  It happened only 12 laps into the race during a 15-car pile-up with cars spinning out of control and bursting into flames.  The cars were doing over 225 m.p.h. at the time.

Championship contender Will Power and Rookie of the Year candidate J-R Hildebrand were also involved in the wreck.  The rest of the race was cancellled.

The remaining drivers in the field were told of Wheldon's death during a meeting with IndyCar racing officials then returned to the track and did a five-lap salute in his honor as "Amazing Grace" and "Danny Boy" was played over the track sound system.

Wheldon leaves behind a wife and two small children.  He was 33.
