Video Games That Could Make The HOF In Rochester, New York

Back in the day, parking in front of the TV to play hours and hours of our favorite video games was considered a “waste of time.”

Fast forward decades later, and there are influencers making millions of dollars streaming themselves playing games on Twitch, not to mention launching thousands of careers in video game design, direction, and audio, among countless other avenues.

Several prestigious colleges and universities across the U.S. offer degree programs and courses in video game design and development (see, Mom? We were doing our homework!), and even many of us who didn’t get into the gaming industry still have a PS3 or an Xbox hooked up in the basement, helping us to destress after a long day.

That’s why we love seeing which iconic video games are being looked at to join the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Which games are up for the honor this year?

World Video Game Hall of Fame Names 2024 Finalists

You might be familiar with the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, due to the famous National Toy Hall of Fame located inside.

But what you may not realize is that the Strong Museum is also home to the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and has been inducting games into its halls since 2014.

The Video game HOF received thousands of nominations from the public for its 2024 class, and now gamers can vote for their favorite as part of a “Player’s Choice” ballot on their website. The three games with the most votes will then form one ballot, and join the other ballots submitted by the museum’s International Selection Advisory Committee.

Video games must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for induction into the hall of fame:

Icon-status: The game is widely recognized, respected, and remembered
Longevity: The toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time
Geographical Reach: The game meets the above criteria across international boundaries
Influence: The game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general

The winning games will then join iconic past inductees like Pong, Wii Sports, Grand Theft Auto, and The Oregon Trail as members of the World Video Game Hall of Fame,.
