We were talking about swimming suits, sometimes called swimming trunks.  Why are they called trunks?  That term goes back centuries when people wore underwear under most of their body.  And usually it covered the entire trunk of their body all the way down to their feet.

People who went swimming would peel off their clothes and go in their underwear…their trunks.  Some of the reason for being completely covered back then was is if you had a suntan it would indicate you were lower class because you had to do hard manual labor outdoors in the sun.  Over the years, parts of the swim trunks disappeared….the lower legs and the chest, but the name remained.  It wasn’t until the 20th Century that having a tan began to be associated with having a life of leisure.

In 1946, a French designer made world headlines when he introduced a two-piece woman’s swimsuit that revealed the navel.  He called it the bikini – naming it after the Pacific test site for nuclear weapons Bikini Atoll.

In this country we cover more of our bodies at the beach than in other countries around the world.
In Europe and South America it’s pretty common for women to go topless at the beach.  It’s no big deal there.  Just like a bare-chested guy in this country.  Women get arrested for going topless in this country no matter how hot it gets.
