It’s time once again for our Hometown Hero, brought to you by Batavia Downs Gaming with help from our friends at WNY Heroes who help us with our nominations every week.  This Week’s Hometown Hero is from Darien, NY.  From our United States Marine Corps, it’s Steve Schaffer!

Steve graduated from Alexander Central School in 2010.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps later that year in October and shipped off to Parris Island, SC. He Had 3 months of boot camp then headed to NC for marine combat training. A few months and a few more training courses later he was shipped off to the fleet and based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina. While there, he learned how to operate tactical fuel trucks.  He was deployed  to Afghanistan at a small base called FOB Ouellette (pronounced oh-let) and also Camp Leatherneck. There Schaffer aided in the support of eliminating Taliban presence in his area of operations. When He returned back to Beaufort, he was honorably discharged in January of 2015.

This week, we say thanks to Steve Schaffer our Hometown Hero of the week! .

If you would like to see a picture of Steve, go to WYRK.com!  While you’re there, nominate your own Hometown Hero. We like to honor both active duty and veteran heroes from right here in Western New York.
