It's unfortunate that following the holidays it seems that we always hear about stores that will be closing and this time some very popular well known stores, Sears and Kmart will be closing some locations. The stores that will be closing have not yet been named and we will not know for a while if the list will include any stores within the western New York area.

There are multiple Sears stores in the local malls including the Boulevard Mall, Galleria Mall and the store that stands alone in the former Summit Park Mall site.

Area Kmart stores are in Niagara Falls, West Seneca, Cheektowaga, Batavia and Buffalo.

Both stores are owned by Sears Holdings Corp, and the closings are partly due to poor sales during the holiday season, the company did not get the results they were seeking. It has also been tough to compete with the world's largest retailer Wal-Mart and other stores like Target and Best Buy among others. Sears clothing sales have decreased and consumers have continued to look for deals in household goods in the tough economy.

Sears Holdings Corp. says that the list of stores that will close will be available on the web site http://www.searsmedia.com when the final list is complete.
