With about two laps to go in the AdvoCare 500, NASCAR Driver Jeff Gordon crashed into fellow driver Clint Bowyer. The bump sent Bowyer into the wall and sparked one of the greatest NASCAR fights of all-time -- in the pits!
A wild finish on and off the track at Phoenix International Raceway and big change in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship.
First – the winner – Kevin Harvick had enough gas to win in a green, white, checkered finish after a series of crashes in the final laps. The win breaks a 44-race winless skid for Harvick.
The field is set for this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Clint Bowyer won Saturday night’s race at Richmond, but the bigger story was Jeff Gordon who drove himself into the final Chase wild card spot edging out Kyle Busch by three points.
It was a combination of good luck and bad weather that allowed Jeff Gordon to win his first race of the season. Teammate Jimmie Johnson got loose on a restart and knocked Matt Kenseth into the wall. Kenseth then bounced off the wall and took out Denny Hamlin and that’s the opening Gordon needed to take the lead. And for Gordon it couldn’t have come at a better time. Rain started falling and with 98 of the scheduled 160 laps completed, officials called the race and Gordon was awarded the win.
David Reutimann apologized for his mistake that had a huge impact on the outcome of yesterday’s race at Martinsville. With a broken suspension he elected to stay on the track to build points, but then his engine quit and he coasted to a stop just three laps from the scheduled end of the race. It brought out a yellow flag and that’s when the fun began.
Tony Stewart says he and his team have had a miserable year up until just a few weeks ago when he finished third at Atlanta and then seventh at Richmond before his first win of the season at Chicagoland. His 40th career victory also ended a long winless streak.
Even with a vibration issue late in the race, Jeff Gordon was able to hold off Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jimmie Johnson, during the closing laps to win Tuesday's Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway -- a race delayed two days by Tropical Storm Lee. Gordon led a race-high 146 laps for his third win this season and 85th career Cup victory putting him in sole possession of third place on the all-time winners list.
It's been quite a month of August for Brad Keselowski. Since breaking his ankle during testing at Atlanta he's won at Pocono, came in second at Watkins Glen, placed third at Michigan and Saturday night won his third race of the season taking the checkered flag at Bristol Motor Speedway
Sprint Cup and Trucks are at Pocono this weekend, Nationwide is at Iowa. Can you believe Jeff Gordon is 40? The four-time Cup champion celebrated his birthday yesterday and there'd be no greater gift than winning at Pocono again.
Gordon won there in June, tying Bill Elliott for most victories at Pocono with five and also picked up his 84th career win matching him with Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip for third place on the series' all-time race winners list.
