The discussion came up on reddit's Adirondacks forum recently about the best drives in the park. So using their suggestions and our own travels though the park, here are the 5 Best Drives in the Adirondacks.
Blue Ridge RoadNorth Hudson to Newcomb
Blue Ridge Road is Essex County Route 84 and connects US 9 at North Hudson to New York State Route 28N near Newcomb. Reddit user 2_z_mntz suggests Blue Ridge Road because of its connection to the Adirondack Ghost Town of Tahawas, which "takes you either to a old titanium mine (amazing views here probably some of the best in the adk's I think) or a trail head for high peak hikes."
Route 421Veterans Mountain Camp
Route 421, located in the St. Lawrence County town of Piercefild, is one of the most remote highways in the New York State road system. At just 220 cars per day, it is easily among the least traveled. Route 421 begins at Route 30 and dead-ends near Horseshoe Lake. Along its short 5.7 miles of pavement, the road offers views of the southern tip of Tupper Lake.
Whiteface Veterans Memorial HighwayWhiteface Mountain
Whiteface Mountain Veterans Highway is a toll road (one of two in the Adirondack Park - Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway in Lake George the is other) that climbs Whiteface Mountain. Known officially as New York Route 431, the road, like Route 421, receives very little traffic, just 280 cars daily according to the state's DOT Traffic Volume Report.
Route 28 Though Fulton Chain LakesOld Forge to Raquette Lake
The Fulton Chain of Lakes, 8 of them overall, are the result of the damming of the Moose River at Old Forge. Route 28 traverses the chain though the hamlets of Inlet and Eagle Bay.
This drive thorough the southern Adirondack Park is the easiest to get to for travelers on the New York State Thruway and passes the popular Enchanted Forest/Water Safari amusement park.
Upper Woods RoadEssex County Route 25
Upper Woods Road leads close to the beginnings of New York's mighty Hudson River. While the source of the river is generally considered to be in Lake Tear of the Clouds near the summit of Mount Marcy, the waterway doesn't pick up the name Hudson River until the point where Calamity Brook meets the outflow of Henderson Lake. And you can get to that point at the dead end of Upper Woods Road.
