Amherst police are now warning people that if they live in Amherst or if they're coming there for any other reason, they will need to keep all of their valuables out of sight.

Police warn people to hide their belongings when they're not in the car

You may have seen the posts on social media from people and police about keeping your vehicle doors locked. While they're still encouraging people to do that, now, they're telling people that our cars are pretty easy targets, and we need to take the extra step to keep our valuables out of view from possible thieves.

According to the police, there has been a recent surge in incidents where suspects are simply busting out the windows of vehicles to grab whatever they can see.

Remember to do these three things to minimize your risk

They add that there's no real way to guarantee that your car won't be broken into, but that you can certainly minimize your risk of having items stolen if you follow these three rules:

1. Hide valuables from plain view - This could mean putting things in your glove box, in the center console, or even just under the seat.

2. Store items in the trunk before you park - Before you walk away from your vehicle, make sure that things are stored away in your trunk so they're completely out of view and locked away from thieves

3. Take personal items with you when possible - This is your best bet. Your items can't be stolen from your car if they aren't in your car at all. However, it's very important to make sure that you aren't leaving things in your car overnight for someone to steal.

Our lives are busy. Normally, when you're coming home from work or going from one place to another, the last thing you think about is what you're leaving in your car. But if we can have that routine checklist in our head about what we're leaving in there, we might give thieves one last thing to try to steal from us.
