They’re almost in the same order in terms of water volume except Lake Erie and Ontario are switched.  Lake Ontario holds more than twice as much water as Lake Erie because Ontario is more than four times deeper. In fact Lake Ontario is second only to Lake Superior in average depth. It’s so deep it never freezes over like Erie often does.

Together, the Great Lakes hold 21 percent of the world’s supply of freshwater. That’s enough to cover the mainland 48 states with nearly 10 feet of water.

One lake in Russia – Lake Baikal is equal to all the Great Lakes combined. It’s the largest freshwater lake in the world.

Larger yet is the Caspian Sea – it’s a landlocked salt water lake. It has the largest surface area of any other lake in the world. It’s fed by 130 rivers. It’s 750 miles long and as much as 435 miles wide. It’s nearly five times larger than Lake Superior.
