Bad News For The Bills Defense Against The Chiefs This Sunday

The Buffalo Bills are preparing to play in their first primetime game since the AFC Championship game in January. Their opponent on Sunday will be the same exact opponent as well: the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs host the Bills at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday Night Football on NBC.

The game will be a rematch of the AFC Championship game in the 2020 playoffs. Kansas City defeated Buffalo, 38-24 in a game that featured the Bills not being able to protect Josh Allen and the defense's inability to stop the Chiefs passing game.

The story going into this week 5 game is a bit different than it was in January. The Chiefs are 2-2 and at the bottom of the AFC West division, while the Bills are 3-1 and at the top of the AFC East division.

The Chiefs offense has been playing well, minus some turnovers, but their defense has been nothing short of bad through the first four weeks of the NFL season. The Chiefs have allowed the second-most yards per game so far and the second-most points through four weeks; while the Bills have statistically the best defense.

Granted, some of that is because the Bills have played less than stellar opponents, but the Chiefs defense will be going up against the an offense that is averaging close to 40 points on Sunday.

Kansas City got some great news on Tuesday, however. Newly-signed wide receiver Josh Gordon was elevated from the practice squad and will play this Sunday against Buffalo.

Gordon, 30, was once one of the premier threats at wide receiver in the league, until he ran into substance abuse troubles. Gordon missed the entire 2015 and 2016 season due to a suspension. Gordon played sparingly from 2017-2019, but then missed the entire 2020 season with a suspension. He's never played all 16 games in a regular season.

Gordon is immensely talented, however. He led the NFL in receiving yards in 2013 and is considered a big-body receiver who can be a threat at any level of the field. Him on a team with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes might be what he needs to salvage his career.

The Bills didn't have safety Jordan Poyer and cornerback Taron Johnson this past Sunday against the Houston Texans and linebacker Matt Milano left the game with a hamstring injury.

Bills head coach Sean McDermottt said after the game that all players are day-to-day, and the hope is all three will play at Kansas City.

The Bills absolutely need them to play, especially Milano, who excels in pass coverage. The Bills will have their toughest test of 2021 and the addition of Josh Gordon will only had to the challenge for the Bills defense on Sunday.
