Black Bear Sighting Confirmed In Hamburg, New York

The Police in the Town Of Hamburg has confirmed that a black bear has been seen wandering around the area over the weekend.

The Town of Hamburg police posted on their Facebook page that the bear was seen on Scranton Road near Strnad Drive in the town of Hamburg. The bear was spotted on MAy 28th around 1:30 am. Police have advised residents in the area to stay away from the bear if they see it.

You are also asked to call the police if you see the bear in the area and it shows any sort of aggressive behavior.

Police also advised residents in the area to secure their trash cans and outdoor bird feeders. Plus residents were asked to keep a watch on pets that go outside and if possible keep those pets inside.

According to the Police's Facebook post, New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation has been notified and they believe that no other action needs to be taken at this time. They believe that the bear is just roaming and will leave the area soon.

Do:

• Use noise to scare bears away: Yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite.
• Stay calm: Walk slowly and speak in a loud and calm voice.
• Leave slowly: Cautiously back away from the bear and leave the area.

Don't:

• Approach, surround, or corner a bear: Bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective.
• Run from a bear: They may chase.
• Throw your backpack or food bag at an approaching bear: This will only encourage bears to approach and "bully" people to get food. By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/residents, and the bears.

You also never want to feed a bear any type of food.
