Buffalo Bills Face Jersey Number Dilemma With Three Players
There is one jersey number that is about to become pretty popular on the Buffalo Bills, but only one player can wear it. How will they decide?
I'll admit, for most people, jersey numbers don't matter much.
Normally, they're pretty easy to determine, too. When a player joins a new team, they can choose which number they would like to wear. What happens, though, if that number is already taken?
How does it work if a number on an NFL team is already taken?
For the most part, the players will work it out amongst themselves. The player that is already on the team normally gets priority. If an established veteran is coming to a team and wants a number, the player who owns it can either give them the number or in some cases, even sell it to the incoming player.
But again, it's normally up to the players to work it out amongst themselves.
This year, the Bills have 3 players who wore the #2 last year
It's pretty uncommon to have three players who wore the same number the previous year. The player who has it right now is Tyler Bass. He's been the team's kicker since 2020 and has always worn the #2. The Bills traded for DJ Moore from the Bears. He's been in the league since 2018 and has worn #2 since 2021. Prior to that, he wore #12.
The Bills also picked up Bradley Chubb from the Miami Dolphins. He started his career in the NFL with the number 55 with the Broncos. He has only worn #2 since 2022 when he came to the Dolphins.
So, who will wear #2?
We know that it won't be Bradley Chubb. He said today that he will be wearing his old college number when he gets to the Bills. He will be wearing #9, which is available since the Bills released Taylor Rapp just before free agency. (The Bills also just signed Kyle Allen who wore the #9 last time he was with the Bills, but we won't get into that).
It will be up to DJ Moore and Tyler Bass to work out who will be changing their number this year. We know that DJ Moore will not be able to go back to #12 because that one has been retired by the Bills for Jim Kelly. All we know is that only one of them will be able to wear it when they finally take the field at the New Highmark Stadium this fall.
