It happens every year, and this year is no different. One Western New York town got hit by some young kids with teepeeing, and it’s been a mess to clean up.

If you were driving through Akron, NY over the weekend, you probably saw the weepy willows made out of toilet paper and houses completely covered with rolls of it.

Many homeowners hate when this happens every year, but there are some people that actually enjoy the tradition – other than the teepee-ers, of course.

In honor of homecoming, the kids in Akron went down the streets, decorating houses with toilet paper and filling the streets with laughter.

One Akron resident, Tracy Spenton, shared her appreciation for the tradition in a Facebook post

Debbie Wyttenbach saw the photos and originally thought it was vandalism.

“This is a yearly thing?” She said, “I drove by and thought kids were going to be in trouble for vandalism.”

Nope – just a homecoming tradition! And legend has it, the tradition has been around since 1977!

It is really a cool experience. Some of the Akron police officers came by to shut down the road so the kids could do it.

You may be wondering how the houses are selected as targets, and it’s an interesting process. According to one community member, the varsity football players teepee the homes of the cheerleaders and vice versa, For other sporting teams, the girls go against the boys as well. Sometimes, they have had the juniors go against the seniors.

Hopefully it was a good homecoming weekend, and be ready for next year! ‘Tis the season for a good ole teepee.
