Typically the News, TV, and Radio stations share and report the news. It's not very often that those organizations actually make the news, but that exact thing is happening right now in Western New York.

The daily newspaper that has served Buffalo and Western New York since 1880 has recently announced that they are selling their longtime office building in downtown Buffalo, just on the edge of Canalside, and planning to move Buffalo's Larkinville district which is just about 1 1/2 miles to the east.

The award-winning newspaper has operated out of its current 5 story office building at the corner of Washington Street and Scott Street for nearly 50 years.

The News has more than 500 employees and the changing work landscape is part of what is facilitating this change. As people are seeking a more flexible workspace, and with the rise of remote work, many companies are reevaluating their needs in a physical office.

While One News Plaza, The News' current facility, has more than 165,000 square feet of space, their newly leased space will be around 20,000 square feet inside the Larkin Exchange Building.

Even though The News is selling its office building, officials have stated they intend on keeping the Scott Street building that houses the printing press facility.

The building's new owner, Uniland Development Co, plans to redevelop the building into a mixed-used structure. Final plans haven't been announced yet, but it's sure to have some commercial, retail, and residential space. The purchase price hasn't been released yet, but I'm sure it's substantial considering the size and location of the building.

There have been a lot of changes in downtown Buffalo over the last 15 years and this announcement is another one that will have an impact on how the Cobblestone and Canalside neighborhoods look.
