A heavy and dangerous snowstorm is causing traffic issues all around Western New York. A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect until 4 am Wednesday for the North Towns of Western New York and 10 am Wednesday for the South Towns. Heavy snow, combined with very frigid temperatures, has caused schools to close and travel advisories to be issued throughout several counties.

The issue when temperatures are as cold as they are right now in Western New York is that road salt struggled to work, failing to melt the ice and snow. Drivers have to take extra caution, leave more space than usual, and slow down. Winds are also making things tricky, blowing snow all over and reducing visibility.

The I-90 that runs through Buffalo hit a particularly rough weather patch today, causing an accident involving two tractor-trailers. WIVB News Channel 4 in Buffalo shared a video of the crash.

We hope that everyone is OK.

Meanwhile, Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon has issued a state of emergency.

It's important to avoid travel during times like these. We understand it's not always possible due to jobs, care, and other things that the weather can't stop happening. If you can stay home, though, please do.

All of Erie County is under a travel advisory, and Governor Kathy Hochil has declared a state of emergency. Buffalo's Skyway is closed due to the conditions.

According to News 4 Buffalo, the cold will remain tomorrow, but a "warm up" will come this weekend with temperatures in the low 30s. It's not exactly tropical or warm, but it's better than the negative wind chills felt today in Nickel City.
