Everybody knows that this time of year can be challenging on the roads with driving in the dark, animals darting across streets and unforeseen accidents happening. Trust me, I've definitely been there before and I'm sure you may have been too.

That's why I decided to talk to Rich Barnes, president of The Barnes Firm, which is one of the largest injury law firms in America. It also happens to be located right here in our hometown of Buffalo!

One of the things I wanted to ask Rich about the most was what people should do in the event they get into a collision with some type of wildlife, like a deer:

It's an accident that needs to be reported to not only your insurance company but also a law enforcement agency. It's something you want to take care of right away. The smart thing is to take photographs of the damage that may have been created by the collision and let the law enforcement professionals do their job, do an investigation, and write a report. It might make things go easier for the driver when dealing with the insurance company.

Rich also talked to me about the importance of SUM insurance, which is something you may or may not have heard about before:

One of the things I recommend to folks all the time is the purchase of supplemental underinsured motorist (SUM) coverage.

In a nutshell, that type of coverage allows you to protect yourself and your passengers in the event you're involved in an accident where there are serious injuries, it's the fault of the negligent driver, but that driver does not carry adequate liability coverage to compensate you completely and fairly for your injuries.

If that's the case and you have the SUM coverage, you can turn to your own insurance company and say, 'I cannot be fully and fairly compensated by the at-fault driver. I'm turning to you for the insurance I purchased to make up the difference so that I can be wholly compensated.'

SUM is not as expensive as people might think and it's certainly worth exploring when you're in the market to either change or purchase liability motor vehicle insurance coverage for the first time.
