Time to take an icy cold trip through Buffalo’s weather history.
If you grew up here in Western New York, freezing temperatures in the Buffalo area come with the territory. We know we’re not exactly a winter vacation destination, but does Buffalo, New York really have it that bad when it comes to how cold it can get here?
We’ve come to expect that whenever the Queen City is mentioned in pop culture, it’s more than likely followed by a quip about the snow (or the Bills). And sure, we’ve had some treacherous weather here in Western New York over the years, and plenty of days where we’ve had to close schools and businesses due to the extreme temperatures. If anything, we think it makes residents here in the City of Good Neighbors more resilient. But…is the cold weather in the 716 really that bad?
The truth is, compared to the coldest days ever recorded in Buffalo, we’ve seen far worse. We haven’t seen extreme record-setting freezing temps around here in years.
We went and analyzed decades of data from the National Weather Service to travel back in time and see which days here in Buffalo were the coldest of all time, and honestly, woah.
Props to our ancestors and those who came before is for having to deal with the extreme cold without the comforts of technology that most have to stay toasty today - - some of these record setting cold days took place nearly 150 years ago!
