I don't know about you, but I still have a little voice in the back of my head that tells me to look both ways before I drive over a railroad crossing. Even if traffic is flowing and the arm is up, I still feel like I should double-check. New York has had its share of railroad crossing accidents that have had injuries, fatalities, and both. The rankings are based on fatal incidents and those with injuries over the past 10 years, from January 2011 to December 2021.

In 2002, this crossing was listed among the 10 deadliest in New York in a report by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This particular crossing has had two incidents in the last 10 years, with one of them being deadly. On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, two Long Island Rail Road trains his a car at this crossing, killing three people, according to the New York Times. Seven of the passengers on the train were also injured in the incident.  In 2020, a new underpass was opened to allow drivers to avoid the dangerous crossing. Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro said,

The Westbury community is very happy that the School Street grade crossing has been eliminated, as for decades that location had posed a grave danger to motorists and pedestrians. There was a fatal accident at that location, and there had been others in the past as well.

In the past decade, the crossing has had two incidents.  One of the incidents was extremely deadly, with 6 fatalities and 40 injuries. On February 3, 2015,  passenger train number 659 - Metro-North Railroad Harlem line - hit a 2011 Mercedes Benz ML350 SUV at the Commerce Street crossing.  The train was carrying 650 passengers, 5 of whom died, along with the driver of the SUV, according to the Harlem Valley News.
