The 2021/22 NHL regular season is about to begin! The Tampa Bay Lightning got to raise the Stanley Cup banner in front of their fans on their opening night this week. It is a scene that Buffalo fans have watched all too often from a distance and only can pray for a championship moment like that at this point.

Winning a Stanley Cup in the NHL championship could be one of the most difficult things to do in sports. It is a long season for fans and players when the regular season gets started and then you have to take into account the playoff series as well. Perhaps someday fans of the Buffalo Sabers will get to witness this at home here in Buffalo?

But until then, we have an opportunity every now and again to see the Stanley Cup up close and apparently that just happened at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport this past week.

The "Keeper of The Cup" was traveling to Tampa to greet the Tampa Bay Lightning prior to their home opener and cup and banner raising ceremony. A friend of mine snapped this photo while waiting in line next to the keeper of The Cup.

The Stanley Cup is probably the most majestic looking trophy in all of sports. It has been in Buffalo a couple of times when players from championship teams who call Buffalo home bring it with them when they visit with their families. But fans of the Buffalo Sabers are still waiting for that moment when the Stanley Cup can be hoisted over a championship team here in the Queen City.

The Sabres will face off against the Montréal Canadiens at 7 o’clock at home this Thursday night. You will need your vaccination status proof when you enter the arena for the regular season this year.
