This weekend started with a beautiful, clear and cool Saturday morning across most of New York State. The month of August is here and there is still a good deal of summertime left. However, those who love to hunt are already dreaming of the upcoming seasons and this cool weather has us excited for what it next!

Based on the activity that I have seen on my trail camera this weekend, the deer seem to enjoy the cooler temps as well. The bucks are grouped up, and on the move, and the doe and fawns seem to be everywhere!

Although seeing the deer become more active is exciting, we need to be patient. The New York State hunting season is still a couple of months away. However, we can still prepare, and get the business portion of hunting taken care of.

If you plan to hunt deer this fall in New York State and want a doe permit/doe tag, you'll need to get the application in before the start of the season.

Doe Tag Deadline In New York State

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, those who want to apply for a doe tag need to do so before October 1st, 2025.

These are referred to as "antler less" deer tags by New York State. "DEC strives to manage deer populations at levels that are in balance with available habitat and in alignment with public desires by incentivizing harvest of antlerless deer by hunters. Antlerless deer are primarily female and are the primary component of the deer population that drives population growth".

The more seasoned hunters and landowners you speak with the more you will understand the importance of taking our doe from the herd where you hunt. It is the best way to keep the population balanced and under control.

Good luck this year and be safe! From what I have seen so far, there are some really good racks growing on the bucks so far!
