School is back in session throughout all of Western New York, and to keep our kids safe, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office posted a warning for all drivers this week.
“It is not an option drivers, you see these, you must stop,” the post read.
Drivers who recklessly attempt to pass a school bus that is stopped for the purpose of picking up or dropping off passengers in New York state, with accompanying red flashing lights, can lead to the following consequences:
- The first conviction could lead to a fine of $250-$400 and/or up to 30 days in jail.
- The second conviction could lead to a fine of $600-$750.
- A third conviction could lead to a $750-$1000 fine.
- 5 points on your license.

Most police stations in the area posted some kind of warning for drivers as a reminder to not pass a stopped school bus.
“Remember that for every stopped school bus you drive past an angel loses its wings.”
