How Horses Are Changing Veterans’ Lives in Western New York
As we approach the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we remember one of the most significant moments in American and world history. June 6, 1944, marked a major turning point in World War II and helped pave the way for Allied victory.
For most Americans, D-Day is a chapter in a history book. More than 80 years have passed since that fateful day. But for some Americans, the memories and sacrifices connected to World War II are still very much a part of everyday life. For many veterans and their families, June 6, 1944, can feel like it was only yesterday.
The rest of us owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the Greatest Generation and to all those who have served our country.
Finding Meaningful Ways to Say Thank You
Many Americans wonder how they can properly thank veterans for their service. Whether honoring those who served during World War II or recognizing the men and women who have served in conflicts before and since, finding the right words can sometimes be difficult.
A simple “thank you” is important, but there are also meaningful actions we can take to show our appreciation. Every day, we have opportunities to support those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms and those who continue to serve our communities and our nation.
A Western New York Organization Making a Difference
One organization in Western New York is helping veterans and first responders heal from the invisible wounds of service.
NEIGH (National Equine Institute of Growth Through Healing) provides veterans and first responders with opportunities to address anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other challenges through equine-assisted therapy.
Using horses as part of the healing process, NEIGH helps brave men and women in our community overcome some of the lasting effects of military service and emergency response work. The program offers support, connection, and hope for those who have dedicated themselves to protecting others.
How Equine Therapy Helps Veterans and First Responders
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Dawn Samuelson, founder and program director of NEIGH. She explained how the program works and how community members can help support its mission.
The organization is focused on helping veterans and first responders regain parts of their lives that may have been impacted by trauma experienced while serving our country and communities. Through equine-assisted therapy, participants develop trust, confidence, emotional awareness, and coping skills in a unique and supportive environment.
A Veteran’s Story of Service and Sacrifice
During our conversation, I was also introduced to Iraq War veteran Kirk Gollnitz.
Kirk served as a United States Marine and also experienced the heartbreaking loss of a brother who was serving in Afghanistan. It is difficult to imagine the pressure, grief, and challenges that veterans like Kirk and their families carry every day.
Stories like his remind us why supporting veterans is so important. They also provide an opportunity to teach future generations about the sacrifices made by those who serve and what those sacrifices mean for the freedoms we enjoy today.
How You Can Help Support NEIGH
One of the best ways to support veterans and first responders is by supporting organizations that are helping them heal.
You can help by spreading the word about NEIGH and its mission. Financial sponsorships and donations also play a critical role in ensuring these programs remain available for future generations of veterans and first responders.
Every contribution helps provide therapy, support, and hope to those who have given so much in service to others.

Remembering the Legacy of Service
As we reflect on the last 82 years of American history since D-Day, we are reminded of the thousands of brave men and women who have served as the backbone of our nation’s strength and success.
In many ways, one of the best ways we can honor the Greatest Generation is by supporting their children, grandchildren, and all those who continue the tradition of service today.
A sincere thank you to Dawn Samuelson and Kirk Gollnitz for sharing their stories and their time. Best wishes to them and everyone involved with this incredible mission as they continue making a difference in the lives of veterans and first responders throughout Western New York.
