Free Money! But You Only Have One More Day To Claim It
No, it’s not a scam or a prank.
Do you have a Facebook account? If you do, you’re entitled to a piece of a massive settlement against the social media giant. Former New York State users who have since deleted their accounts are also eligible as well.
But you’ve got to get a move on - the deadline is right around the corner, and the clock is ticking.
You Could Get Part Of Facebook’s Massive Lawsuit Settlement
You may remember that back in March, Facebook’s parent company Meta settled a lawsuit that claimed Facebook allowed third-party groups to gain access to as many as 87 million Facebook user’s personal information.
The settlement states,
“If you were a Facebook user in the United States between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, inclusive, you may be eligible for a cash payment.”
The total payout Facebook has to pay out to their users is a whopping $725 million.
You Have One Day To File A Claim For The Settlement
The last day you can submit a claim to get a payment from Facebook’s settlement is Friday, August 25, 2023.
You can submit a claim either online or by mail, but you only have to do so by the end of the day to get your mail postmarked or submitted through the settlement’s website.
How Much Money Could You Receive In The Settlement?
It’s still up in the air how much the payments people could receive will be. It most likely depends on how long your current or former Facebook account was active, and how many users file a claim to get a piece of the settlement.
It’s also unknown when the payments will be sent out (via a prepaid Mastercard, direct deposit to your bank account, PayPal, or Venmo depending on your preference), but it probably won’t be for a while.
A final settlement hearing will take place on September 7th, where a judge has to grant final approval. Even still, there may be appeals, which would drag out the process even longer.
How To File A Claim In The Facebook Lawsuit Settlement
Even still, if you’re interested in receiving a payment from the settlement, it doesn’t hurt to submit a claim. Free money is free money, right?
To submit a claim for a Facebook account you currently use, you’ll have to find your username (if you don’t know it, the website has a link on how you can find that).
If you submit a claim on behalf of a deleted account, you’ll need to remember either your former username or the e-mail address or phone number you used to sign up. You will also be asked for the approximate dates you had the account (the earliest date you can submit is 5/24/2007).
You’ll need to input other personal information as well, like your name and email address, but if you’re still set on getting some money from Facebook, you can do so here.
