The End Of Family Farms Across New York State?

It is simple. No farms, no food. If we learned anything from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that supply chain issues and a lack of supply was a major concern for everyone. As prices rise to levels we have not seen in years and the hot, dry summer of 2022 comes to an end, it is clear that farmers need our support now more than ever. But a new law may have the opposite affect and essentially cripple the very people we count on to keep us fed.

There has been a vote to push for a new threshold for overtime pay in New York State.

Farmers across New York are already struggling to make ends meet and pay their staff. A new overtime threshold will no doubt put some farms in New York out of business. There are arguments that current reports are not accurate about how much farm employees are being paid and what the conditions are.

In an email from the New York State Republican Committee it was noted and argued that:

"Democrats just delivered a death blow to New York's agriculture industry. Today's decision by the Farm Laborers Wage Board to reduce the overtime threshold is not just out-of-touch--their callous action is knowingly going to put New York family farms out of business.

If you went to the New York State Fair, hopefully you had a chance to speak with or visit the agriculture areas. The heart and soul of the United States is the American family farm and it is also the case here in the Empire State. The rise in diesel prices and materials and supplies has been brutal on farms and these new laws may be the very end.
