In a White House conference call with governors Monday WIVB-TV reported that Dr. Fauci said that the holiday weekend will have a lot to do with the country’s chances of having a “running start” when it comes to containing the virus in the months ahead.

Fauci said that he has a “great deal of faith in the American people” that they will follow CDC recommendations of masks, hand washing, social distancing and avoiding large gatherings.

Two other holiday weekends – Memorial Day and the Fourth of July – were tied to outbreaks in parts of the country.

Indicative of Dr. Fauci's concerns, Health officials in Kansas City recently linked a new coronavirus case to Memorial Day weekend parties at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Social media postings of that event showed crowds of young people many without masks not adhering to social distancing guidelines at pools along a popular central Missouri lake.

Health officials adhering to protocol urged anyone who attended those parties to self-quarantine for 14 days.

This Labor Day weekend is expected to see twice as many people on the road traveling as Memorial Day.
