The latest phone scam could end up costing you lots of money.

Government officials are warning about a new robocall phone scam that is now targeting people.

The calls usually coming in the middle of the night, ring once or twice and then hangs up. When you call that number back, you are calling a hidden 900 number that charges by the minute.

Most of these types of calls are coming from a 222 area code but there are other numbers associated with the scam.

Scammers can also trick people into calling back with a technique known as neighborhood spoofing, in which they manipulate caller ID information to mask their real phone number and have it appear to have been placed locally.

The best way to protect yourself is to never call a number you don't know. You can also google or search for a number online before you call back.
